The Falconer

Tariq and Cai, the protagonists of the film by co-directors Adam Sjöberg and Seanne Winslow, are different from each other in a lot of ways, from their ethnic background to their social status, but they’re united by their friendship and passion for animals. The two teenage boys work together in a zoo in Oman, where they experience the beauty and power of wildlife on a daily basis. Their carefree enthusiasm is somewhat dampened when Tariq is called to deal with a pressing family matter. His sister is desperate to leave her unhappy marriage. It seems like the only way to raise the money she needs for a divorce is by selling animals on the black market, but this decision could have serious consequences for the friendship between the two boys. Inspired by a true story, The Falconer follows a narrative about the clash of two worlds and cultural differences, in the context of a coming of age story. Steering clear of stereotypes and judgments, it deals with loss of innocence and the complex moral dilemmas faced by its young protagonists.
