In the opening scenes of the third movie by Italian director Jonas Carpignano, Claudio and Carmela’s whole family gathers to celebrate the 18th birthday of their oldest daughter. There’s tension and rivalry between her and 15-year-old Chiara (the mesmerizing Swamy Rotolo), visible even in the way they move on the dance-floor. The moments of happiness and joy don’t last long: the following day the father disappears under mysterious circumstances. Chiara, who’s strongly attached to him, decides to discover what’s behind it all. She will have to face the dark realities of the Italian South and take her life into her own hands. Winner of the top prize in the prestigious Directors’ Fortnight section at last year’s Cannes Film Festival, Carpignano’s film shows the complicated growing up process of the central character, deeply affected by criminal entanglements. The director portrays this unusual father-daughter bond with empathy and understanding, and the main cast is comprised of Rotolo family members, which — beyond giving the movie a certain authenticity — sheds a unique light on the interpersonal dynamics within its particular world.
