The latest film by Harry Wootliff, the acclaimed Only You, is a moving psychological drama. The incomparable Ruth Wilson (star of The Affair) plays Kate, a woman in her 30s living in a British coastal town. She’s accepted her monotonous existence: she works at an employment agency and occasionally visits her parents or her only friend. All this changes dramatically when a mysterious blond ex-con (the equally electrifying Tom Burke – the star of Joanna Hogg’s movies) shows up at her office and shamelessly flirts with her. A twisted emotional and erotic relationship immediately develops between them, and Kate develops big hopes for the future. Wootliff shows the potential attraction of a toxic, abusive relationship with great skill and an empathy informed by feminism, as Kate wades in without a second thought. Extreme close-ups allow the viewer to get a deep insight into Kate’s psyche, revealing the dynamics of her ever-growing obsession.
