Volker Schlöndorff's film is set in civil war-stricken Lebanon. German journalist Georg Laschen and his photojournalist Hoffman arrive in Beirut to cover the conflict there. The men document events, talk to people, not fully understanding the reasons for the conflict, the rationale of each side, and above all the brutality that spares none, not even women and children. Laschen quickly realizes that it can be extremely difficult to present the facts objectively without exaggerating, selecting information or adding ideology to it. The protagonist's moral dilemmas are compounded by his renewed acquaintance with an attractive woman named Ariane. The war drama directed by a prominent German director answers a number of universal questions about human attitude in the face of an extreme situation. False Witness was nominated for a César award while Jerzy Skolimowski, playing Hoffman, received the German Film Award for his performance.
