Oleg Sencov's film is set in 1990s Ukraine. The title Rhino comes from the nickname of the main character, a young man who’s a combination of brute strength, calm and a certain recklessness. We meet him on the streets of the small post-Soviet town that played an important role in shaping his uncompromising character. He starts out as a petty thief, but quickly rises in the hierarchy of a local crime gang, soon becoming its leader. This leads to consequences that affect both Rhino and his loved ones. His world slowly starts to crumble, and it gradually dawns on him that brute force is not always a solution... "I wanted to tell a story about a breach, a void that was created after the collapse of the Soviet Union and that had to be filled somehow. This happened largely through people like my main character. Many of them came to power and held it for many years," says Sencov, who wrote the script for the film before he became a political prisoner and spent several years in a Russian penal colony.
