In the complexities of life, man seeks happiness. By all means he tries to find stability and love – inexplicable. Reality shows that a lost man longs for stability and fresh perspectives that will light his path. Saïd Hamich Benlarbi’s film Across the Sea is about the prospect of a better life in an incomprehensible world.
It is the incredible story of a young boy Nour (Ayoub Greta), who comes from Morocco. He illegally emigrated to Marseille. At the beginning of the film, we are introduced to young friends who live from petty crimes. When the gang is broken up, Nour comes across Serge (Grégoire Colin), a policeman, and his wife Noémie (Anna Mouglali), who help him with the basics to organize his life. Over time, his story unfolds, leaving the viewer more and more surprised.
The film is divided into three chapters, showing a decade of the boy’s life. This element is ideal for sorting out the complexities of life. It is a picture of the passing of time, but also full of empathetic inner wanderings. The fantastic artistry of the actors – Ayoub Gretaa’s debut, as well as the presence of the esteemed Colin – adds additional strengths to the production. Sophisticatedly realized shots, which introduce the viewer with great emotion to the themes presented, will give the viewer the opportunity to influence the sensual sea.
Across the Sea is a full-bodied film that maturely guides the viewer through the story of a young immigrant. Unobtrusive cinema that subtly conveys to us complications that go unnoticed by most. It is a journey that will make us realize what happiness can be and perfectly illustrates life’s labyrinths.
The film Across the Sea (dir. Saïd Hamich Benlarbi) is to be seen at the 18th Mastercard OFF CAMERA as part of the Bests of Fests section, of which Interia is a partner.
