The main character in Anna Jadowska’s feature is a young married woman named Ewa (an exquisite performance by Marta Nieradkiewicz). She lives with her mother out in the country, taking care of the house and two children, while her husband Andrzej is off supporting the family in Norway. Separated from him for months at a time, eventually Eva gets lonely and starts an affair with a teenage boy who’s in love with her, and ends up getting pregnant. She decides to leave for a few months to protect herself from the kind of gossip that spreads like a virus in a small town. After giving birth, Ewa leaves the child behind at the hospital for adoption. When Andrzej comes home for their daughter’s first communion, he senses Ewa’s distance and starts to suspect that she’s hiding something from him. Condemned by the community, Ewa feels isolated and misunderstood, which in turn influences her relationship with her children. “I decided to make this movie after I became a mother myself, and a horrible, creeping fear came over me that I would lose the child or leave it somewhere. It was very atavistic; an instinct kicked in,” said the director in an interview. She has managed to create a compelling portrait of a woman forced to face her ambivalence about motherhood while confronting the hostile, small-town community that surrounds her.
