Lionel Baier’s new movie is set in Paris during the tumultuous month of May, 1968. The protagonist is a little boy (the charmingly naive Ethan Chimenti) who stays at his grandparents’ big apartment during the student strikes and street protests which his parents are directly involved in. He lives with his two charming uncles — one of them a visual artist and the other one an aspiring intellectual — and his great-grandmother, born in Odessa, who’s eccentric and entertaining despite her advanced age. While out on the streets of Paris events unfold that will forever change the history of the country, the audience witnesses through the boy’s POV the equally interesting adventures of his family members, who are forced to confront their past as well as the difficult times at hand. Based on an autobiographical novel by Christop Baltanski, Baier’s bittersweet comedy had its world premiere at this year’s Berlinale. The central character, a boy who doesn’t yet fully comprehend the tumultuous events exploding all around him, becomes our guide through this colourful world during the historic times of May ’68.
