EYE FOR AN EYE
LE ROYAUME
2024 / 108 min / color
Corsica, 1995. 15-year-old Leisa (Ghjuvanna Benedetti in her first film role) thinks she’s about to have a carefree summer; she’s completely unaware of what is coming. Suddenly, a stranger on a motorbike takes her to an isolated villa where her father (Saveriu Santucci) is hiding. From scraps of conversation and media reports, she learns about the assassination of a prominent local politician; it soon becomes clear that the attack was actually meant for Leisa’s father. Pierre-Paul is considered the power behind the throne on the island and influences everything that happens there. The police have been searching for him for several years. Events escalate and threaten to erupt into a major conflict and a bloody new chapter in the island’s history. Despite the increasingly tense atmosphere and the looming danger, Leisa has no intention of leaving her father’s side. Julien Colonna’s debut feature is striking for its raw authenticity and superbly nuanced performances. The Corsican-born director finds the perfect balance between a gripping thriller about organized crime and an intimate portrait of the developing relationship between a father and daughter.
