The protagonists of Fernando Andrés’s film are Gen Zers Ben and Jordan. They have a lot in common, from their close friendship since childhood, through their dull adult life in Austin, Texas, which has little to offer other than low-paid work, to their dream of a permanent move to exciting New York. It won’t be easy, especially as they’ve just become homeless and have no idea what to do with themselves. One evening, they come up with the crazy idea of turning couch-surfing with friends and family into a way of life. Maybe not forever, but at least for the next 12 months. It’s supposed to be a social experiment, but the idea of not paying rent for a whole year is extremely tempting; the only question is whether it’s feasible. The American director has crafted an offbeat comedy about male friendship, full of subtle humour. With a definite satirical streak, Andrés portrays a generation teetering on the edge, abetted by strong performances by Jacob Roberts and David Treviño in the lead roles. Rent Free is a classic Gen Z buddy movie.
