A family of five is living in an old country house in the sleepy Slovakian countryside, each of them coping, in their own way, with problems centered around the themes of growing up and growing older. The children are getting ready to leave the family nest and start a life of their own, and the parents are facing the challenge of adjusting to this situation. This linear order of events is disrupted by the unexpected news that the mother, who’s in her forties, is pregnant. The thought of having another child or sibling gradually sinks in with all the members of the household, who find themselves readjusting their relationships with each other. Making his feature debut, Slovak director Martin Pavol Repka draws on his own family experience for this story. In the spirit of slow cinema, he examines the most minute details of his characters’ daily lives in a way that brings to mind patient documentary observation. Most importantly, he does so with great sensitivity and understanding, presenting the audience with an intimate portrait of a family at a moment of fundamental change.
