The protagonist of Egyptian director and activist Mohamed Diab's film is Amira, a 17-year-old Palestinian girl. She has a special bond with her father, even though he’s been in prison for years. It’s not easy — the short visits are no substitute for having him fully present in her life. And yet Amira is not discouraged; she can count on the support and affection of those close to her. But when her father tries to conceive another child and turns out to be infertile, Amira's somewhat orderly life falls to pieces. So many unanswered questions keep coming to the surface. It’s hard for her to come to terms with the idea that everything she believed in so deeply could be a lie. The search for identity is a favorite topic for filmmakers; Mohamed Diab places it in a local context, mostly in order to show the chaos that arises in the head of a young woman faced with an extremely difficult situation, just as she’s stepping into her adult life. Amira has been highly acclaimed at many film festivals; in a broader sense, it’s an insightful look at today's divided world through the eyes of a confused teenager.
