I Was a Simple Man

Christopher Makoto Yogi's second feature is set on the Hawaiian island of Oahu. This exotic, breathtaking location is the setting for a unique story about family ties, unresolved history and the line where life crosses into death. This is what the elderly family patriarch Masao (an excellent Steve Iwamoto) soon has to face, haunted by the ghosts of his past. Since the loss of his beloved wife, Masao has withdrawn from family life, largely isolating himself from his children. The distance he has created over the years will prove difficult to overcome, but Masao has to ask for help from those closest to him when, due to his age, it becomes increasingly difficult to be self-sufficient. Combining family history with local mythology, dreamy poetics and surrealism, Christopher Makoto Yogi creates a poignant tale of a broken family confronted with a huge challenge. All of this combines to make I Was a Simple Man a deeply sensual and somewhat meditative experience.
