Beautiful Beings

Icelandic director Guðmundur Arnar Guðmundsson's second film, following the unforgettable Heartstone (2016), combines the poetics of initiation cinema with a dark story about a world defined by brutal violence and animalistic aggression. The film’s young characters have been left with emotional scars from their experiences at home and in their neighborhoods. 14-year-old Balli lives with his drug-addicted mother and everyone treats him like a freak; he’s physically and mentally abused at school. His first chance for a "normal" life comes unexpectedly when he meets three new friends. They’re violent and always looking for trouble, but they’re also loyal. Addi in particular shows a lot of empathy toward frequently-bullied Balli, perhaps because he struggles with his own demons every day, but also because he has inherited a gift of sensitivity and intuition from his mother. Addi's disturbing visions make it clear to the young protagonists that they’re at a crossroads, and it's up to them to decide whether to choose a more secure path or repeat their parents' mistakes and dive into chaos.
