The North Sea

1969 turned out to be a very important year for Norwegian industry. Shortly after the announcement of the discovery of huge oil deposits in the North Sea, drilling and widescale exploitation of the vast resources began. The impact of these activities on the environment was completely overlooked in the rush to development and the pursuit of profit. Several decades later, a disturbing incident occurs when one of the drilling platforms collapses. A group of experts, which includes Sofia, the film’s central character, come to a frightening conclusion when trying to explain the event. It turns out that this is only the beginning of an imminent large-scale ecological disaster. Workers from hundreds of platforms scattered around the North Sea have to be evacuated immediately, but reaching some of them, including Sofia's partner, is extremely risky. John Andreas Andersen's gripping film may bring to mind disaster cinema classics like Michael Bay's Armageddon. But while the Hollywood film could be taken with a grain of salt, in this case the danger stemming from human activity feels much more authentic.
