Italian director Daniele Misischia’s second feature is a wild and highly entertaining tribute to American coming-of-age and horror movies from the ’80s. It’s set in 1988 in a small Italian town where 20-year-old Gio — a big-time film geek — wants to shoot his own slasher movie, on VHS of course. His best friend Alberino helps him with the project and Vanessa, the most popular girl in town, plays the lead. Gio has a huge crush on her, but he spends most of his time watching gore movies and reading comic books. Suddenly people from Gio’s town start getting killed, one after another, and the macabre events are very similar to what happens in one of his favorite graphic novels. Misischia skillfully mashes up the conventions of teen movies like cult classic Goonies with those typical of iconic horror films like Halloween. He takes his audience into a world defined by nostalgia for a bygone era, where teenagers have to fight a dark and mysterious presence, and a sense of humor turns out to be the best antidote for lurking evil.
