In Orit Fokus Rotem’s debut feature, eight women from Palestine and Israel meet at an amateur film workshop taught by Rona, a young director. The characters are very different in terms of their ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation and economic status. But their personal stories about everyday joys and struggles — as well as domestic and systemic violence — are gradually revealed in the course of the classes, bringing them together in unexpected ways. The film medium itself becomes both a catalyst and a vehicle for their shared stories, enabling the characters to walk through their fears, process their trauma, and open up to one another and to previously unknown worlds. Fokus Rotem based her script partly on her own experiences as a teacher. Her complex and fascinating characters, however banal it may sound, really come together in their passion for cinema and storytelling. And the on-screen sisterhood that emerges between them brings hope for the possibility of a new and better social order.
