Josephine

Juan (Roberto Álamo), the shy protagonist of Spanish director Javier Marco’s feature debut, speaks very little in the first few minutes of the film. It’s significant because he works as a prison guard, and every Sunday he observes Berta (Emma Suárez, the star of Pedro Almodovar’s Julieta), the mother of one of the inmates, with growing fascination. When he finally gets up the courage to talk to her on the bus, the line he rehearsed gets stuck in his throat. Eventually he does manage to strike up a conversation, but he’s worried that she might not be interested in him if she finds out he’s a guard, so he comes up with a story about a fictional daughter named Josephine who is supposedly serving time as well. Soon their bond, based on a fake feeling of solidarity between parents with children in prison, turns into a dangerously close relationship built on a lie. Josephine is the captivating story of a pair of achingly lonely people who meet at a time when the emptiness in their lives is becoming unbearable. It’s beautifully performed by Suárez and Álamo, who convey the emotions and needs of their lost characters with great empathy and sensitivity.
