The nightmare of World War I, the experiences at the front and imprisonment in a Russian camp have left a group of soldiers returning to Vienna deeply scarred, both physically and psychologically. They feel cheated and exploited by a system that fed them romantic, nationalistic ideas for years. That proved to be of little use, and the soldiers’ wounds seem particularly difficult to heal. Their trauma is compounded when they realize that there’s nothing waiting for them when they get back, and the city that once felt like home has changed beyond recognition. One of these soldiers is Peter Perg (Murathan Muslu in a wonderful, highly physical role). He realizes it’s impossible to go back to his old life, and he’s determined to make the best of his new situation. He soon gets the opportunity to do so, as he joins a team of investigators. They’re on the trail of a serial killer who’s on the prowl in Vienna, targeting war veterans. Austrian director Stefan Ruzowitzky, winner of an Oscar for his excellent The Counterfeiters (2008), creates a dark, dystopian world that crime fiction fans will find fascinating. With distinctive cinematography by Benedikt Neuenfels, Locarno award-winner Hinterland boasts more than just an intricately constructed plot; it’s also an unforgettable visual experience.
