The main characters in Pete Ohs’s latest film are Bethany and Nel, played by Charli XCX and Lena Góra. Bethany is a young British woman on a short trip to Warsaw with her partner, Rob. She gets a sense that he’s planning to propose during the trip, but she isn’t sure if she wants to take the next step in their relationship; she chooses to distance herself. She reconnects with her old friend Nel, and the old chemistry and mutual fascination are quickly reignited. As they spend the next few days together, questions arise for everyone involved – especially the love-smitten Rob. The story unfolds on the picturesque streets of Warsaw, and the city becomes a character of sorts in the film. Ohs developed the project out of a fascination with Warsaw, and many scenes were written collaboratively with the actors while on set. This improvisational approach gives Erupcja the quality of a vivid urban portrait, capturing the specific energy of the locale and the beauty of the here and now.
