OF CERTAIN AGE
DOLORES
2025 / 84 min / color
The titular Dolores (played by the charismatic, electrifying Carla Ribas) is a 65-year-old widow whose great ambition is to open her own casino; the problem is that she struggles with a serious gambling addiction. Her daughter is exasperated with her and has problems of her own — her partner is in prison. Dolores has a close relationship with her granddaughter, who works at a gun shop and dreams of moving to America. These three generations of women struggle to navigate Brazil’s still quite patriarchal society, determined to fight for their visions. The unfolding plot gradually reveals a complex web of relationships between the main characters. Co-directors Maria Clara Escobar and Marcelo Gomes interweave naturalistic scenes with dreamlike sequences and musical interludes. And Dolores’s inner strength verily radiates from the screen, exemplifying how you can strive to get more out of life at any age.
