Magdy and Sama are a long-married, harmonious couple settling into the quiet rhythm of retirement. Their daily routine is unexpectedly disrupted by a small domestic tragedy: their old refrigerator breaks down. What begins as a routine household problem quickly spirals into something much bigger, exposing the couple’s insecurities, lingering resentments, and tensions surrounding their sense of social status. All of this unfolds against a backdrop of rigid and often absurd administrative rules and regulations. Yesser Shafiey’s directorial debut feature, starring Egyptian cinema legends Mahmoud Hemida as Magdy and Sherine as Sama, layers a sharp sense of humor into a warm and intimate portrayal of aging, marital struggles, and the frustration of having to deal with everyday bureaucracy. The old, broken refrigerator becomes a fitting and comical metaphor for the couple’s personal troubles, as well as broader societal issues.
