Maria Angeles (played by Carmen Maura, the legendary star of Pedro Almodovar films) is a Spanish woman pushing 80 who has lived her whole life in Tangier – a city with a rich but complicated history, a crucial element of which is its Spanish community. Her daughter lives in Madrid with her family and is struggling financially, so she decides to sell Maria’s beautiful, spacious apartment without letting her know. Maria has a deep connection with her neighborhood in Tangier, and strives to hold on to her beloved place in the world and the right to do things her own way — at any cost. Along the way she gets into a passionate affair, opens a cult cafe and tries to outsmart a real estate agency. Maryam Touzani’s movie, presented at last year’s Venice Film Festival, is loosely based on the story of her grandmother, who lived in Morocco. Carmen Maura returns to the big screen in great style, delivering one of the best performances of her long and glittering career; her character – who in the end is an elderly woman – impresses the audience with her strength, determination and vitality.
