BERGMAN ISLAND
2021 / 105 min / color
American filmmakers Chris (Vicky Krieps) and Tony (Tim Roth) spend a summer on the mythical island of Fårö, where the legendary Swedish director Ingmar Bergman lived and worked. He used the island’s landscape in films such as Persona, Shame and Through a Glass Darkly. The protagonists of Bergman Island hope to find inspiration for their upcoming projects here; they arrive at the master’s estate and get to work on their screenplays. Chris really feels the burden of the great director’s legacy, and it’s a little more difficult for her to adjust to the place. As the days pass, mostly spent apart, Chris starts to relive memories of her first love. This is also the theme of her screenplay, which is set on Fårö. The script tells the story of a meeting between a man and a woman, played by Mia Wasikowska and Anders Danielsen Lie. The boundary between reality and fiction starts to blur, creating more and more distance between Chris and Tony…
The film screening is part of the Festival’s Opening Gala, which is accessible by special invitation only.
