STAY SANE
ANDREA LÄSST SICH SCHEIDEN
2024 / 93 min / color
Andrea, the main character of Josef Hader’s second film, has two big problems: she’s fed up with her job as a small town cop and she’s fed up with her husband. She intends to change things soon — ending her unhappy marriage once and for all, and finding a new job as a detective in a big city. But her situation shifts dramatically and unexpectedly: after a boozy birthday party, she accidentally runs over her drunk husband. Then she does something she should never do, especially as a law enforcement officer — she flees the scene. In a state of shock, she fears she’ll be quickly identified, which would ruin all her plans. But a local teacher with a serious drinking problem unknowingly rescues her by turning himself in as the perpetrator of the accident. Andrea continues to cover her tracks – until guilt sets in. Hader paints an in-depth and far-from-stereotypical portrait of a rural community; despite dealing with serious issues, the film makes room for a healthy dose of humor, making it something of a tragicomedy.
