Łukasz Grzegorzek’s debut feature is already considered a generation-defining film for today’s 30-year-olds. Mania and Kamper, a young married couple, have reached that age. Once madly in love, now they’re somewhat jaded and unsure about their future together. In their case the old saying that opposites attract doesn’t exactly pan out. She’s ambitious, hardworking and full of ideas. He’s a sort of Peter Pan character, working as a video game tester by day, and zoning out at night with his Play Station. Kamper feels no need to become an adult, in spite of the threat from a celebrity chef who seems to have taken a liking to Mania. People keep telling Kamper to grow up before it’s too late, that time is running out. Grzegorzek illustrates the conflict with a dose of irony and great empathy for his characters, beautifully played by Piotr Żurawski and Marta Nieradkiewicz. It’s a charmingly candid and unassuming portrait of slightly lost, helpless young people—a mirror for many of us to see ourselves in.
