Diehard party girl Gloria gets dumped by her boyfriend—he’s clearly fed up with her wild lifestyle, and she has no choice but to return to her hometown. She reconnects with her high school friend Oscar, now the owner of a local bar, and starts to hang out with him practically every night. Bizarrely, Gloria discovers a direct link between herself and a monster who suddenly appears on the other side of the world—in Seoul. The creature, which wreaks havoc and terror, is not only a very real and physical danger, but also a twisted metaphor for Gloria’s inner fears. The film shifts  into a surprisingly harsh critique of the kind of patriarchal norms that make both men and women unhappy. In a funny, innovative way it shows the line increasingly blurring between the monster and Gloria and her companions. Spanish director Nacho Vigalondo uncompromisingly subverts the conventions of drama, horror and science–fiction. Feminist and perverse in spirit, Colossal offers a rare, masterful mix of subversive content and great entertainment.
